Esme | The Grim Grotto: Part 1 | A Series of Unfortunate Events | Makeup

Dear Reader,

I bet you thought that you were finally safe from posts that contain such misery and horror. But there are several more dastardly makeup tutorials to wrap up the third and final season of the Netflix adaption of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.
It is my solemn duty to chronicle the makeup of the individuals surrounding the lives of the Baudelaire orphans. For your own happiness you would be better off closing this window and opening a post showcasing rainbows and pink bunnies.

After a break to attend to my own series of unfortunate events, I'm back to wrap up the last five episodes of ASOUE. Starting with The Grim Grotto: Part 1 and Esme's "Happy Family" disguise.

(Picture via my Netflix account. Lucy Punch as Esme Squalor from A Series of Unfortunate Events S3 E3 The Grim Grotto: Part 1. For tutorial purposes only)

Major blue and red eyeshadow with a coral lipstick for this "family" outing to steal a fortune.

I captured this villainous look in a video tutorial back in July here

What You Need:

1. Matte Royal Blue Eyeshadow: Blend a blue eyeshadow 1/3 of the way across the eyelid; starting from the inner corner and moving towards the center of the lid, but stopping just before reaching the center.

2.  Light Peach Eyeshadow: Take a matte peach eyeshadow and blend it over the remaining 2/3 of the eyelid and lightly into the crease, stopping just as it meets the blue.

3. Red Pigment & Medium Taupe Eyeshadow: Using a crease brush take a matte red shadow and apply it in the outer 'V' of the eye and blend through the crease. After, take a matte medium taupe shadow on an angled eye brush and press it just into the outer 'V' to add depth. Blend each of the seams gently with a blending brush.

4. Snow White Shimmer Shadow, Black Liquid Liner, & White Pencil Liner: Blend a white shimmer shadow across the brow bone for a highlight. Run a black liquid liner along the natural line of your lashes, but don't wing it out. Take a white eyeliner pencil through the lower water line.

5. Matte Black & Blue Eyeshadow, Mascara, Lashes, and White Pigment: Run a black shadow across the lower lash line and then take the same royal blue shadow from the lids and run it under the black. Apply lengthening mascara to top and bottom lashes and add some natural lashes for more definition. Add an off white pigment to the inner corners of the eyes.

6. Contour, Highlighter, & Blush: Take a cool-toned light brown contour shade and run it under and around the cheek bone. Use an off white, matte highlighter on the top of the cheek bones, under the eyes, and down the bridge of the nose. Apply a pink blush to the apples of the cheeks and blend with contour shade and highlighter.

7. Coral & Peach-Orange Lipsticks: To achieve Esme's lip color I mixed coral and orange matte liquid lipsticks together for a custom shade and applied it to my lips.

Put it all together and we get...

Our finished product: Esme's red and blue makeup from the beginning of the Grim Grotto. Perfect for a party or lying to submarine rental company in order to kidnap orphans and steal their fortune.

A matte foundation pairs nicely with the alternating matte eyeshadows and doesn't compete with the pops of shimmer shadows on the eyes.

A peachy-coral lipstick is ideal for this one of Esme's disguises. I didn't have a lipstick that fit the shade, so I mixed two liquid lipsticks on the inside of my wrist and added more of each shade as I blended until I achieved the color I wanted and applied it with my ring finger.

False lashes that aren't too long and are fuller work nicely for this one of Esme's looks that is not too (by comparison) over the top.
