I have used many Tarte products over the years, but this
is my first Tarte eyeshadow purchase.
I was immediately drawn to the palette when I saw the
variety of shades.
The box itself is mesmerizing ๐
The palette is good sized and has a sturdy plastic shell.
It’s a lovely purple shade with “Maneater” leopard print all over the cover.
It also contains a large mirror that makes on-the-go application a breeze.
Once you open the palette you are treated to a host of
“shining, shimmering, splendid” (remember Aladdin?) eyeshadow shades and
finishes.
I didn’t know where to start with so many gorgeous colors to choose
from.
I felt like a kid in a candy shop (do candy shops still exist? ๐ฌ)
It's nearly the size of a mini laptop, but it's also light weight and durable.
When closed this palette is sleek and easy to store.
When opened it becomes an eyeshadow wardrobe that will get you through any event.
A generous 24 eyeshadows fill this palette, with a shade range from
neutral, everyday shades to intense deep colors for a night out.
There are 11 matte shades, 9 shimmer shades, 3 Luster shades,
and 1 glitter shade.
Each one is unique and has the potential to give you a multi-dimensional eyeshadow appearance.
The
pigments in these shadows are incredible!
The color payoff is unmatched.
For
the shimmer/metallic shades one swipe of color gives you a super saturated foil
effect.
The sparkle is unreal with minimal fallout.
8 of the shimmer shades have Tarte's signature Maneater
leopard print embossed on them.
The
matte shades are blendable and can be built to whatever shade intensity you
desire.
The Amazonian clay infused pigments give these shadows unbelievable staying power.
I wore these eyeshadows for about 14-hours one day and when I went to remove my makeup, these shadows were still perfectly in place with no creasing or fading!
The glitter shade (Alpha) sparkles like a diamond and is an excellent party shade.
The sepia brown color gives you a low key smoky effect while still getting a hit of glam from the glitter. A true multi-tasker!
The luster shades have the most beautiful pearly finish that are enhanced even more when the light hits them just right.
Blending the luster shades is so fun because the pearl effect looks ethereal when swept across the eyes.
1. Passionate Blend: Start with the shade Passionate (Matte Plum) and sweep that through the crease of the eye, building color.
Then use a blending brush to soften and diffuse the line.
2. Tease & Blend: Next take the shade Tease (Matte Umber Brown) on small eyeshadow brush and trace a thin line through the crease of the eye, in the middle of the smoked out Passionate shade.
Then take the blending brush again and soften the line made with Tease.
This is just to add extra dimension to the eye.
3. Don't Forget the Sizzle: With your index finger take the shade Sizzle (Light Bronze Shimmer) and swipe it across eyelids for a shimmering metallic effect.
4. Pounce + Eyeliner: Take the shade Pounce (Matte Off-White) on a medium eyeshadow brush and dust it across the brow bone.
Use a liquid liner to trace along the top lash line.
Then take a pencil liner and fill in lower water line of the eye.
5. After Dark + Fascinate, Mascara & Concealer: Use the shade After Dark (Matte Navy Blue) on a flat brush and trace it along the lower lash line.
On a pencil brush take the shade Fascinate (Champagne Shimmer) and dust that onto the inner corners of the eyes.
Add a volumizing or lifting mascara and swipe it on top and bottom lashes.
Use a concealer under eyes to clean up any fallout (there was barely any).
6. Finish with Face & Lips: To complete our Maneater Nightfall look add a contour shade and run it under cheek bones about halfway down cheeks.
Sweep a highlighter on the tops of the cheek bones and under eyes.
Dust a rosy blush on the apples of the cheeks.
Finally, take a matte coral lipstick and apply it to the lips.
This will complete...
Our Tarte Maneater Nightfall Eyeshadow look!
These shades are so crazy pigmented. I really love the effects, especially of the shimmers.
I went with a matte lip as to not over power the already sparkling eyeshadow.
There are such a variety of shades in this palette that there is definitely something to suit everyone's personality, compliment your skin tone, and bring out the color of your eyes.
A little example to show how incredible the staying power of these eyeshadows really is;
shortly after recording this tutorial I went to the driving range and hit golf balls for about an hour.
It was almost 80 degrees (record breaking for the end of October in New York), and when I got in the car I checked my eyeshadow and it was still perfectly intact!
No smudging, smearing, or creasing! Incredible eyeshadow!

A more natural, everyday look using the shades Paws Off & Sly.

I have no regrets, it's as close as I'm getting to a real selfie with him lol ๐ )
A bit more colorful look with the shades 9 Lives & Wild.
I got up at 2AM to watch the Ryder Cup in Italy, the whole pot of coffee was necessary ๐
Dear Readers, It’s been quite some time since my last makeup tutorial
inspired by the Netflix adaption of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate
Events. Upon popular request over the last few weeks, I have
created a makeup tutorial for Dr. Georgina Orwell. You can watch my video tutorial here
Who?
Photo from my copy of the book The Incomplete History of Secret Organizations Published by Hachette Books.
I do not own the rights to this book and absolutely no copyright infringement intended.
The use of the photo is purely for teaching/tutorial purposes.
As a side review; this book is awesome and is an incredible companion to the Netflix adaption and an enjoyable read for anyone interested in the show or books.
Please don't sue me!
As you may recall, Dr. Orwell is from Lemony Snicket’s
fourth book The Miserable Mill. She is the optometrist who lives in the town of
Paltryville and is a secondary antagonist. She uses hypnosis to cause all sorts of problems for the Baudelaires. She is portrayed by Catherine O’Hara (Home Alone) in the
Netflix adaptation and shows up in The Miserable Mill: Parts One & Two.
What’s the Look?
The staple of her makeup look is heavy black eyeliner of
the top and bottom lash lines. She also has a strong blush/contour that is
heavy on the upper cheek bones.
She also wears large dark rimmed glasses that correspond
with her dark eyeliner rimmed eyes.
Her lips color is mainly a neutral nude color, except for in a flashback in The Carnivorous Carnival: Part One, where she is wearing a deep
red shade.
How Can I Created this Miserable Makeup Look?
Although I advise against it, if you keep scrolling you
can read my step-by-step tutorial.
I also advise against watching my video tutorial here
1. Foundation, Eye Primer, & Basic Brown Shadows:
The
first step is to get a good foundation with a natural finish to give you a nice
canvas to work with.
Next use an eyeshadow primer to cover the eyelid and
crease so everything we add will stay in place.
It’s a bit hard to see Dr. Orwell’s eyeshadow because of
her bangs and large glasses, but it appears to be more neutral shades.
So, I went
with a matte burnt sienna shade and blended it through the crease of the eye.
Then I took a brownish pink shade (also matte) and covered the lids.
I used a matte powdered highlighter on the brow bone.
2. Black Gel Liner & Powder Eyeshadow:
Next take a
black gel eyeliner pencil and run it across your lash line, just following the
natural shape of your eye. Continue the with the liner into the inner corners
of your eyes and then work it into the lower water line.
Use an angled eyeshadow brush to smooth the liner across
your top lash line a little more.
On the same brush take matte black eyeshadow and run it
over the gel liner on the top lash line.
Then add some shadow along the lower
lash line meeting the top liner and just creating a tiny wing.
3. Masara & Concealer:
Dr. Orwell’s lashes are long
and occasionally unruly. It doesn’t appear that she is wearing false lashes
though. So I used a volume and lengthening mascara on the top lashes liberally
and just gently applied it to the bottom lashes.
Dust off any shadow fallout with a clean fluffy brush.
Then clean up whatever is left with a liquid concealer.
4. Contour + Highlight + Rose Blush:
Use a matte brown
contour shade and place that just under your cheek bone stopping about midway down.
Blend the shade with your fingertips so the line isn’t quite as harsh.
Next take a matte off-white highlighter and dust it onto the
tops of the cheek bones and under the eyes.
Then take a neutral toned matte blush and cover the
apples of the cheeks and blend towards the nose. Dr. Orwell has a pretty strong
blush so be generous with the color.
5. Lipstick & Setting Foundation: Grab a satin finished nude lipstick and swipe it on your lips.
Then with a powder foundation or setting powder use a makeup sponge to set and mattify your skin as well as define contour.
If you want to go the extra mile you can add lines of black eyeshadow to your face and blend them out to give the appearance of more mature skin like the character has in the Netflix adaption.
I didn't, but you can, it's totally up to you.
Grab yourself some glasses and finally...
We have our finished Georgina Orwell inspired makeup look!
Obviously, the look is not complete without her crazy eyes and creepy smile lol ๐
Eyeliner and mascara are probably the most important products for Georgina's look.
You can get some pretty affordable eyeliners from Colourpop and NYX that are nice and inky.
The mascara I used has been a drugstore favorite for decades (see product list below).
The strong contour and blush are a little bit hidden by her hair in the show but are still a big part of what brings her look together.
Matte finishes are a must for Georgina's look.
Leave the shimmers for Esme.
You can really use any brown/bronze eyeshadows to create the eye shape for Georgina.
Again, just stick with mattes.
If your eyeliner/shadow starts to fade or isn't as strong as you would like, just go back in with the gel liner and strengthen up the ink.
Mine faded a tab because my eyes were watering from allergies.
