Hey Beauties!
Now that we’re in December it’s a good time to start
talking about party makeup (although, any time of the year is a good time for a
party!)
Today I’m going to do a tutorial that is counterintuitive
for me; a neutral, less-is-more party makeup look.
My go-to makeup for any type of party is very colorful
and/or dramatic.
But, it occurs to me that not everyone wants to wear over
the top, intense makeup.
Or some parties and events are better suited
to more subdued makeup.
Too much for a football party?
So, I have a neutral party makeup tutorial for you.
But
just because we are using neutral shades doesn't mean it has to be boring!
You can watch my video tutorial here
What are Neutral Shades Anyway?
Neutral tones and shades are browns, taupes, grays, beiges,
white, off-white, black, creams, and similar colors (or lack thereof).
One could even argue that silver, gold, or even copper can fall into the neutral shade category.
Neutral
shades aren’t limited to just makeup products.
Home décor and fashion have many
neutral toned palettes that are sleek and classic.
What is a Neutral Makeup Look?
Pretty much what is sounds like; a makeup look that
consists of more neutral shades of eye and face products.
Sometimes it refers to using less intense or bold
shades and sticking to more earthy, cool colors.
Neutral eyeshadows would be browns (can also include bronze & copper), beiges/creams (can also include peach shades), black (charcoal as well), grays/taupes (silver too), white/off-white.
Typically, a matte finish is what comes to mind when one thinks of neutral eyeshadow.
I break this "rule" a bit in my tutorial.
Neutral lipsticks are where "nude" lipsticks come in as they offer a subtle hint of brown shades with the smallest addition of pink, peach, or mauve.
It's as if you are just wearing your own natural, naked lips but with a little extra help.
(I completely deviate from this part of the trend in my tutorial).
Finishes are typically satin or matte.
Neutral face products, like blush, highlighter, and contour shades.
They would definitely be matte, not shimmer and have more muted shades of pinks, browns, and off-whites/creams.
How do I create a Neutral Party Makeup Look?
Read on for a fun, yet more subtle, party look using
(mostly) neutral-colored products.
Again, you can watch my video tutorial here
1. Muted Brown +
Blending: Start with a matte muted light brown eyeshadow and take that all the
way through the crease of the eye, rounding slightly at the outer edge of the eye.
Take a blending brush and use it to soften and diffuse the
brown crease shadow, eliminating any harsh lines.
2. Champagne Sparkle Eyeshadow: Press a shimmery light champagne
shadow all over the eyelid meeting the crease shade.
3. Off-White & Black Eyeshadow: Take a matte
off-white shadow and dust it along your brow bone for a subtle eye highlight.
Then use an angled eyeliner brush to press a matte black eyeshadow into and along the top lash line, winging it out just a tad at the outer end.
(To keep things more neutral I used the shadow instead of a liquid liner that would make the lash line too intense for this look.)
4. Volumizing Mascara & Concealer: Take a mascara that gives lashes volume and definition (I like Benefit Cosmetics Fan Fest) and apply two coats to the top lashes, really building volume.
Gently run the same mascara along the lower lash line just to give subtle definition.
With a concealer that matches your skin tone, clean up any fall out under the eyes from any of the shadows.
5. Matte Contour, Highlight, and Blush: With a matte light brown contour shade on a concealer brush just lightly run it under cheek bones and blend it out with your fingertips for a soft contour.
Next use a matte off-white highlighter and just dust it on the tops of the cheek bones and under eyes.
To finish off the face swirl a matte pink blush onto the apples of the cheeks and blend for a rosy glow.
6. Berry Red Lipstick: Here is wear I take a slight turn away from neutral tones. But I think with the eyes and face being neutral, a pop of color is needed.
Grab a liquid lipstick and trace out your lip shape with the wand. Then fill in your lips with the red color.
I chose to hold off on false lashes and liquid liner and instead go with a lightly defined lash line and extra volumized lashes from mascara.
The face shades are very neutral and matte, so there is just subtle hints of color and contour.
The lips are red -- not a neutral nude shade -- but I think it warms the whole look up and ties it all together nicely.
